Top Android Food Apps

Posted By Steve McFarlane on November 30th, 2011

Whether done for sustenance, or for pleasure, finding good or even great food is a matter that no stomach will allow you to forget.

This is a roundup of Android food apps that can help you plan a meal, find great places to eat, or record what you have been eating.

Yelp

If you are not in the mood to cook, there are quite a few food apps you can use to find a good place to eat, but one of the best is Yelp. Truthfully, Yelp is more than an Android restaurant finder, you can also use it to find a place to stay, bars, drugstores, banks and nearly everything else.

Yelp also uses AR (augmented reality) to help you find great restaurants. Do a search and the app will show a map of restaurants you may be interested in — each restaurant is represented by a small bubble that you can tap on to see its: ratings, opening times, menu items, a contact numbers and price ranges.

If you are in the mood to explore, you can use the AR feature to identify restaurants that are close by. Once the feature is activated the app will display icons to represent food establishments that are in the direction you are pointing the phone. QR Code

Urbanspoon

It happens to all of us, we are not in the mood to cook, but can’t quite decide what we want to eat or where we want to eat. Urbanspoon provides a solution of sorts by suggesting some of the best eateries that are close by.

To get a suggestion simply open the app and shake the phone and it will give you a list of restaurants you can try base on their distance from your current location. You can also find eateries in distant places by manually setting a location and having the app find places that are close to that location. This is a great feature you can use to find a good restaurant in another city even before you leave home. QR Code

Recipe Search

If you have ever felt like making a dish that includes a particular ingredient, but aren’t sure about the recipe, you may find ‘Recipe Search’ useful.

You can browse thousands (well over 70k) recipes in categories such as main dishes, appetizers, drinks, side dishes, desserts, ethnic recipes, soups, stews and diet recipes.

You can also browse by top recipes or newest recipes, but we think you will love the single ingredient recipe suggestion feature. This feature allows you to find a recipe based on a single ingredient, which is great for using what you currently have in the fridge to make a tasty meal. QR Code

Food Additives

Even if you are not super health conscious, it helps to know what is in the foods you buy and eat. ‘Food Additives’ provides information on the ingredients that are in the foods we eat and the way those ingredients affect our health.

Though the app has some translation issues, it is still a good resource. The next time you are in the grocery store use this app to check ingredients you are not sure about, you will be surprised what you find. QR Code

Diet Assistant – Weight Loss

Proper meal planning will inevitably come around to managing portion sizes, nutrition and counting calories. It doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds though, well, that is if you have the right app.

Diet Assistant is a dieting tool for people who want to better manage their weight as well as have a healthy lifestyle. Use Diet Assistant as a personal dietitians to plan how much nutrients you take in as well as track and graph how your eating habits contributes to your weight loss or gain. QR Code

Ingredients Substitutes

If you are using the Food Additives app it is very likely that you will come across an ingredient that your conscience will demand that you boot from your diet. In such instances you can use this app to find alternatives to the ingredients you want to replace.

That said, this app is most useful to vegetarians, especially vegans who constantly face the challenge of finding good alternatives to some popular ingredients that make traditional foods look and taste good. Ingredients Substitutes aims to solve this problem by presenting substitutes to 150 popular ingredients.

This app is a great concept, but it is hard to justify paying anything for a list of 150 ingredients and their substitutes, especially when a simply Google search can reveal the same.

Android Apps for Finding Great Restaurants

Posted By Steve McFarlane on September 11th, 2011

One of the conveniences of our time is the ability to take family and friends out to have a meal instead of having to labor to prepare the meal at home. However, it can be challenging to find the next great place to eat.  In this article we highlight some of the best Android restaurant finder apps for discovering great restaurants, and others for finding healthy meals as well.

Where

If you want to find a great place to eat, one of the best resources you can use is to ask a large community of persons who eat out a lot. Where do you find such a large group of restaurant aficionados?  Use a restaurant finder app such as Where. This app has a large list of places to eat, drink, play and have fun based on the recommendations of those who have been there. There are even guides that users have put together to help you make the most of your next visit.

The app makes it possible for you to find easy to reach eateries by showing you a list of recommended places that are close by. As you save places to you favorites the app will be empowered to make even better recommendations of similar places you may also be interested in trying out.

Yelp

There are quite a few apps you can use to find a great place to eat, but one of the best is Yelp. Truthfully, Yelp is more than an Android restaurant finder, in fact, the app is available on every major smart phone platform is can be used to find a place to stay, bars, drugstores, banks and nearly everything else.

The app uses GPS, Google Maps and AR (augmented reality) to help you find great restaurants. Do a search and the app will show a map of restaurants you may be interested in. Each restaurant is represented by a small bubble—tapping the bubble will show the restaurant’s ratings, opening times, menu items, a contact numbers and price range.

If you are in the mood to explore, you can use the AR feature to quickly identify restaurants that are close by as well. Once the feature is activated the app will display icons to represent food establishments that are in the direction you are pointing the phone. You can use the user-generated reviews to make your decision and even use the app to write your own when you are done eating.

Yelp is also a great way to coordinate an over lunch meet-up among friends with its check-in feature. In essence, you can allow you friends to see when you have reached the agreed meeting point and helps them find you as well.

Android Apps to Help you Lose Weight and Get Fit

Posted By Steve McFarlane on September 9th, 2011

Studies show that most overweight persons are desirous to get in shape, but lack the motivation to do so. Fortunately, there are apps to help. These Android weight loss apps will get you moving and doing workouts in no time, not only that, but there are some with journal functionality to help you track your nutrition and calorie intake as well. These fitness and weight loss apps aren’t just for fitness junkies but anyone who has a burning desire to lose weight and get fit.

WW Points Plus Diary + Scanner

This app is based on the Weight Watchers food points system and has gotten several positive reviews from those who use it. For those who aren’t in the know, Weight Watchers has a points system that takes into account a food’s protein, carbs, fat, and fiber numbers. Persons using the weight watchers points system get a daily personalized PointsPlus Target, based on their height and current weight so that they can know how much to eat in order to safely lose weight.

WW Points Plus has a barcode scanner that works in conjunction with the points system to help users determine the nutritional value, and by extension the WW Points, of restaurant and supermarket food items — for now this feature only works in the US. The feature gives the user a powerful meal builder that allows them to plan meals and see how it will affect their overall weight loss or fitness program before purchasing ingredients and or a complete meal.

Additionally, it contains a journal function, which includes the ability to check historical data and to see what has been eaten and the points associated with the data. Users can build their own custom food database and tailor it to fit their favorite foods and meals.

Some other features include activity points tracking, weekly points tracking and target points change alert, which is very useful, as the user’s points will change as they lose weight. A few complaints about this app is the fact that there is no way to sync the app with the website, there is a lack of restaurant database for countries other than the US, and the food database needs to be better populated.   QR Code

JEFIT Pro – Workout & Fitness

This is a splendid Android app for fitness enthusiasts. It allows users to track workouts and create routines. It contains hundreds of weight training exercises categorized by body parts and includes a search function that allows users to easily find workouts and routines. Best of all, those persons who like to workout without a trainer will have access to over 500 exercise instructions, animations and tips.

The app is a compilation of cardio, weight lifting, fitness and strength training exercises. It also enables, the user to view their body statistics and lifting progress. The major selling point for most users is the fact that the app allows them to save their progress over time and use the historical data to stay motivated. The routines are customizable, so you can create your own exercise routines for whatever interval is preferred.

The workout routine planner has customizable exercises that can be tailored to suit the needs of most users. It also supports multiple routines so users can switch between general and specific routines. There is also a smart logging system that automatically records input weight and reps and saves the best lifting records for each exercise.

Other important features include a progress tracking system where a graphic representation of body stats and lifting stats is shown on a chart – it automatically calculates body mass index based on the data that is fed to the app. With constant bug fixes and rave reviews this app is definitely one of the best Android workout apps available.   QR Code

Ultimate Weight Watcher Diary

If you are on the Weight Watchers plan and want to track your points this app is perfect for helping you reach your weight loss goals.  It recreates the entire ProPlus and PointsPlus plans, which means that users can aim to reach their weight loss goals using their Android phones.

The app features a barcode scanner, which can add items to your diary and favorites list. There is also an online food database of everyday food items (over half a million items) along with a built in database of over twenty thousand items. There is a database of popular restaurants for users to track items, along with a daily point diary tracker, which recreates weight watchers e-tools.

The app stores nutritional information within the tracker to allow the user to easily calculate items and tailor food portions. The app can also export data in plain text and spreadsheet formats so your progress can be shared with a friend or trainer. Additional features include recording daily notes within the tracker and an activity points calculator for all plans.  QR Code

Can this App Prevent you from Getting Brain Cancer?

Posted By Steve McFarlane on August 23rd, 2011

Whether you think it is a scare tactic that overly sensitive environmentalists use to make us uncomfortable using our phones, or you genuinely believe that cell phone use can cause brain cancer, we are sure you have wondered if there is some truth to the claim that cell phones can actually cause health issues.

We just came across an interesting app called tawkon that can measure your Android phone’s radiation level and even warn you to switch to speakerphone or use a headset when the radiation levels are too high or are reaching unsafe levels.

In addition to giving alerts, this Android radiation app also charts how much radiation you have been exposed to during the last call, over the past week, month and so on.  The app even reports how much radiation you were exposed to based on the phone’s orientation, bluetooth and speakerphone use. The app is free and can be download using this QR code.

The Best Android Apps for Vegetarians

Posted By Steve McFarlane on August 1st, 2011

The vegetarian lifestyle provides a rich mix of nutritious and healthy foods for those who are conscious about what they put in their bodies. Admittedly, ensuring that one is on a well-balanced diet can be challenging for the new vegetarian or vegan. We have compiled a review list of Android vegetarian apps that are great for the newbie, die-hard vegetarian and those who are simply health conscious.

Animal-Free

Animal-Free allows vegans to follow their strict dietary preference by helping them to choose products that are completely free of animal products. Animal-Free is a full-featured pocket reference and guide to many common and hidden animal ingredients as well as commonly misunderstood vegan ingredients. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, part-time veg, or simply trying to shop veg-friendly, Animal-Free will help you make conscientious shopping decisions.

We like this app but think it could be better if it could scan the ingredients list and categorize what is good, bad or animal-based. QR code

E Numbers Calc

Some ingredients and food additives are safe, others are marginally so, while there are others you will want to exclude from your diet based on your personal preference. Like Animal-Free, this app will help you figure out what is in the foods that you consumed on a regular basis.

With the E Calculator, you can find the additive by its E number (European Food Safety Authority identification number) very quickly, or you can search by name. E numbers are categorized from 1 (good) to 5 (dangerous), to give you an idea about their safety or health risks. The app will tell you if the ingredient is suspected of causing cancer, triggering allergies and hyperactivity or other side effects. QR code

Ingredient Substitutes

One of the challenges that vegetarians and especially vegans face is finding good alternatives to some popular ingredients that make traditional foods look and taste good. Ingredients Substitutes aims to solve this problem by presenting substitutes to 150 popular ingredients.
This app is a great concept, but it is hard to justify paying anything for a list of 150 ingredients and their substitutes, especially when a simply Google search can reveal the same. QR code

HappyCow VeginOut Free

Make more cows and chickens happy by downloading and using this app. With HappyCow you can find health food stores, vegetarian restaurants, and other vegetarian friendly businesses near your current location. You can also enter a location manually so you can plan where you are going to eat before you get there.

The app provides a list or map of vegan & vegetarian restaurants in 90+ countries including:
USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan (Tokyo), some of Malaysia, Brazil, Bangkok (Thailand), Hong Kong, and Singapore. The app’s database is user generated so you too can contribute by entering locations of veg-friendly restaurants.  QR code

Diet Assistant – Weight Loss

Without a doubt, this is one of the most highly rated diet planner that is available for Android. Not only does the app help you track and graph your weight and health profile, it can also be used to plan your meals and plan your shopping list as well. The app is a good solution for vegetarians because it allows the user to specify his or her preference so the app can recommend a meal/diet plan to suit their needs and preference. Here is a list of some of Diet Assistant’s best features:

  • Helps you choose the right food combinations
  • Personalized diet plans to suit your needs, taste and preferences
  • Shopping / Grocery list
  • Nutrition facts
  • Weight-loss manager & tracker (kilograms, pounds or stones)
  • Built-in BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator
  • Profile – set goals using your age, gender and activity level

WeLoveTofu

This vegetarian app presents a list of modern vege cuisine. In addition to the recipes that are already available in the app, a new recipe is added for you to try. I haven’t personally tried the recipes that this app has, but if the user reviews are anything to go by they are pretty good. QR code
